The Making of an Iranian Feminist
By Sayeh Beheshti, M.D.
My Body, His Choice is a feminist blog chronicling my upbringing in Iran set against the backdrop of the Islamic revolution of 1979. The first decade of my life was spent in a secular Iran where women were gaining some basic human rights. That government was toppled, and I came into puberty just as the Islamic Republic was creating and fortifying an oppressive gender apartheid. I escaped Iran in 1984 and started my life over in the United States, where I found another strong patriarchy and a whole different set of problems for women.
Come along this journey with me as I take you through my stories of love, family, perseverance, and survival through a horrific time of violence against women. In it, I combine my extensive psychiatric training with my love of storytelling to reveal the personal, societal, and universal effects of oppressing the feminine.
This is a memoir written in book format. In this section, I list the chapters in the order they can be read.
